It should be no larger that 1.5\u201d x 1.5\u201d x 0.5\u201d. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 What is the amulets theme? \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 What does it protect against or provide for?<\/li>\n<li>Cut your cuttlebone in half and sand one side on each half flat.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer your sketch to one flat side of the cuttlebone.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure to carve in a pour cup and relief vents.<\/li>\n<li>Tie your mold sides together with tape and put your name on it.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the instructor\u2019s instructions for casting your amulet.<\/li>\n<li>Finish your amulet by sanding and filing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>VOCABULARY: bas (pronounced \u201cbah\u201d as in French) relief (low relief), haut (pronounced \u201coh\u201d) relief (high relief), texture, additive, subtractive, volume reversal, negative, positive, sand casting<\/p>\n<p>REFERENCES: Paolo Soleri, Rachel Whiteread<\/p>\n<p>MATERIALS: Cuttlefish bone, Carving Tools, Pewter<\/p>\n<p>COMMUNITY: If you have wheels, try to visit Cosanti in Scottsdale (www.cosanti.com) or Arcosanti in Cordes Junction (www.arcosanti.org)<\/p>\n<p>NOTES: An amulet (from Latin <em>amuletum<\/em>; earliest extant use in <em>Naturalis Historia<\/em> [Pliny], meaning &#8220;an object that protects a person from trouble&#8221;), a close cousin of the talisman (from Arabic \u0637\u0644\u0627\u0633\u0645 <em>tilasm<\/em>, ultimately from Greek <em>telesma<\/em> or from the Greek word &#8220;telein&#8221; which means &#8220;to initiate into the mysteries&#8221;) consists of any object intended to bring good luck and\/or protection to its owner. Potential amulets include: gems, especially engraved gems, statues, coins, drawings, pendants, rings, plants, animals, etc.; even words said in certain occasions\u2014for example: <em>vade retro satana<\/em>\u2014(Latin, &#8220;go back, Satan&#8221;), to repel evil or bad luck.
