{"id":433,"date":"2019-12-16T15:26:19","date_gmt":"2019-12-16T20:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.matthewmosher.org\/studentwork\/?p=433"},"modified":"2022-11-25T14:14:12","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T19:14:12","slug":"culture-jam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mosher.art\/studentwork\/university-of-central-florida\/culture-jam\/","title":{"rendered":"Culture Jam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GOAL: To create a persuasive website.<\/p>\n<p>OBJECTIVE: Students will gain experience working with the web, non-linear narrative, and interaction design.<\/p>\n<p>PROCESS:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To get started, write down responses to these prompts in your sketchbook:\n<ol>\n<li>What are you fighting for?<\/li>\n<li>What would a soldier&#8217;s uniform in this fight look like?\u00a0\u00a0 Draw it.\u00a0 Describe it.<\/li>\n<li>What do you complain about?<\/li>\n<li>Ask someone who doesn&#8217;t understand your problem for help.\u00a0 What did they say?<\/li>\n<li>Enact their solution.\u00a0 What did you do?<\/li>\n<li>What is something that&#8217;s not right that you feel like you can do nothing about?<\/li>\n<li>What is the difference between fake news, propaganda, and advertising?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Note that this project is about subversion and persuasion, not bludgeoning.<\/li>\n<li>How would you translate these ideas into something else?<\/li>\n<li>Continue researc\u00adhing online or elsewhere about the ideas we discussed in class and investi\u00adgate the many different art forms out there that explore ideas of &#8216;Culture Jamming&#8217;. (See related artists.)<\/li>\n<li>What is the role of \u2018audience\u2019 in your site?<\/li>\n<li>What is the role of &#8216;narrative&#8217; in your site?\u00a0 Is it linear or non-linear?<\/li>\n<li>Of all the ideas you have now, select and refine three of them with sketches and models.<\/li>\n<li>Select one and make it!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>REQUIREMENTS:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Work must fit within the realm of Digital Media<\/li>\n<li>Work must have a functioning web component<\/li>\n<li>Site must include at least 5 pages<\/li>\n<li>Site must implement a navigation structure<\/li>\n<li>Site must be public on the internet<\/li>\n<li>Site must try to persuade its audience toward some goal<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>CONSIDERATIONS:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You may want a custom domain name, up to you<\/li>\n<li>You may want your own hosting space.\u00a0 UCF does have some server space available to students that you can use for this project.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll need an FTP client to access it (try FileZilla it&#8217;s free).\u00a0 <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/students.cah.ucf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">There&#8217;s information about the server here<\/a>, you&#8217;ll almost certainly need to reset your password &#8211; it&#8217;s different from your NID.\u00a0 Note that the server used to be called Sulley &#8211; replace any references to sulley.cah.ucf.edu with students.cah.ucf.edu.<\/li>\n<li>Servers sound scary?\u00a0 There are many ways to complete this project and different tools that you can use.\u00a0 Try to choose a tool that will be useful to you in the future.\u00a0 Not everyone needs to know back end web development, but almost everyone can benefit from some understanding of WordPress.\u00a0 Options:\n<ol>\n<li>UCF Server with custom HTML\/CSS<\/li>\n<li>UCF Server with custom PHP\/MySQL<\/li>\n<li>Externally hosted custom Ruby\/PostgreSQL<\/li>\n<li>UCF Server hosted wordpress.org<span class=\"screenreader-only\">\u00a0<\/span> installation<\/li>\n<li>Externally hosted on wordpress.com (note that there are some severe design limits here)<\/li>\n<li>Externally hosted on wix \/ weebly<span class=\"screenreader-only\">\u00a0<\/span> \/ etc.\u00a0 (note that these sites mix paid and free versions of their hosting, with more control and less ads for paid paid subscriptions)<\/li>\n<li>Other web tools, discuss with the Professor<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Because everyone in class has different existent web design skills I am not going to demonstrate a particular technique in class.\u00a0 Use something that is of interest to you and appropriate to your skill level.\u00a0 If you have never used PHP before now is not the time to learn it.\u00a0 There are tons of resources online for learning all of these systems, and the proprietary ones have their own tutorials.\u00a0 I can point you towards specific guides as needed and can help you during office hours.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a <a class=\"inline_disabled external\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KfkjC2lwUrE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video on setting up the UCF student server<span class=\"screenreader-only\">,<\/span><\/a> which you can access at <em>http:\/\/studnets.cah.ucf.edu\/~YourNID <\/em>And here&#8217;s a <a class=\"inline_disabled external\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/mapZRqijR1Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tutorial on installing wordpress.<\/a> As a UCF student you also have unlimited access to lynda.com.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>RELATED READINGS: Critical Art Ensemble, Maoulthrop, Aarseth, Oulipo, Weizenbaum, Suchman<\/p>\n<p>RELATED ARTISTS: The Yes Men, Barbie Liberation Organization, \u00ae\u2122ark, Culture Jamming, Adbusters, Mouchette, Paul Sermon, Natalie Jeremijenko, Trevor Paglan, Guerilla Girls, Adrian Piper<\/p>\n<p>SUBMISSION: To complete this assignment, submit a link to a 2 minute video documenting your work. Your video should include audio narrative explaining the thought process behind and functionality of your work. Use screen capture software for this. \u00a0You can make a screen capture easily on Mac using Quicktime, go to File &gt; New Screen Recording.\u00a0 You can edit your video with whatever software you are comfortable with (Final Cut, Premiere, iMovie, etc).
