In addition to working on my thesis, I also took a Metals elective this semester and was finally able to make a ring I first sketched in Australia, 2006. I have a lot more respect for jewelers now. At first I thought the size was the only difference between small metals and sculpture, but the materials are much harder to work with, too, particularly soldering. And it is more like woodworking in that you can’t really add and subject material, it’s mostly all subtractive. Here are some photos of my work from the class:
- M@ Keychain: Etched Copper
- Ben Strear: Cast Bronze
- International Space Station Belt Buckle: Brass and Copper
- Wood Ring: Cast Silver and Rosewood
- Zip Tie Ring: Cast Silver
- Averted Eyes: Silver and Blue Zircon

The rings are gorgeous, they really make a statement.
